Utah DIY/OTC Any Bull
Elk
Contributors to this thread:
'morning All,
I got quite a bit of question traffic last year about Bow Hunting Elk in the Any Bull units here in my home state, so I promised to do a thread this year.
Some quick administrative-------->
Ya need a hunting License $65 and the OTC Bow Elk tag is $393, No habitat stamps or archery stamps or anything like that is needed.
The unit I am going to share is called North Slope West Daggett it is an Any Bull unit, no antler restrictions.
The overlap deer unit is Unit 8/DB1513
Part of the Bull Moose unit is covered in the North Slope 3-Corners/West Daggett unit
2- Mnt. Goat units can be reached thru this elk unit; High Uintas East and High Uintas Leidy Peak.
2-Rocky Ram Units can also be reach thru this elk unit' North Slope 3-Corners/BARETOP Mnt and North Slope West Daggett/Sheep Creek.
There are Bear tags and Mnt. Lion tags thru the respective draw's.
Real fun unit to hunt as ya just never know what other species ya may see.
Thanks for taking the time to view and Enjoy!

It's big country and great for glassing up them dang elk
I normally go thru the small town of Manila Utah by Flaming Gorge lake
Plenty of campgrounds and plenty of side of the road camping options.
Not a bad FAM-FAM summer vacation/scouting trip area as it's about 100 mile to Dinosaur National Park
Some nice Log Cabin options to stay in if so desired
Plenty of different terrain to hunt from Ponderosa Pines, Quakie's to dark Pine Timber higher up
It's Safe to ax this guy for directions!!

Love your posts Robb, keep em com'n.
Cool pictures Robb, beautiful Country out there, thanks for sharing!
Loved Dinosaur National Monument, I had to stop there, on the way to CO, for my first archery elk hunt over 20 years ago.
This is great, Robb! Thanks for sharing!
Wait a minute, I thought Colorado was the only place for NR OTC elk! ;-)
Best keep secret in all the Western states. I prefer the same priced tag in a spike/cow unit. Any NR can hunt elk ever year.
Good info Robb, as always
Oregon also has lots of otc nr tags. Looking forward to the information you’re sharing
Thanks fella's
Some quick answers via private contacts; This is the North Slope of the Uinta Mountains, the Reservation is on the South Slope.
Yes, you can get your tag via On-line sometime in Mid June I believe they are available.
Nope, fishing license is Not included, ya gotta buy that separate, maybe a short term license like 5-7 Days?
The Youth Only Special Elk dates hunt in Mid-September is valid to hunt in this unit for Any Bull units.
NO x-guns allowed during the bow Only dates.
I think that answers ya'll---------->
Good luck, Robb
PS~~Yes, the Famed Green River is about 30 minute drive via Dutch John and the turn off to Little Hole.
Most of the trails up onto the Mountain have creeks to cross, some ya gotta navigate to stay dry and some have nice lil' bridges
Good Sign info thru out the unit.

If you bring the kids out for a vacation/scouting trip, this is a must see as it's manned most days in the summer by a volunteer and man-o-man you can see for miles!

Looks vast, elk are like fleas on a dogs back. My kinda place... Thanks for showing us.
Robb, nice Fu Manchu mustache.
Great stuff, Robb! Looking forward to more!
Great info...thanks for sharing.
What success rate could one expect for archery in that unit?
Also, I have 12 elk points for Utah. I would like to draw this year and bale out of the never ending point creep Ponzi Scheme. What archery zone would you recommend for this year which would be near 100% chance of drawing?
BULELK1's Link
Thanks!
Let me answer some private requests--------->
Ron toss me a PM as if I stated any lock with 12 point bow units everyone else would read it and it would ruin your chances!!
The Deer tags that overlap this area are 100% Draw only.
Yes, they do offer OTC rifle tags for this unit too
Yes, this is the Ashley National Forest/Flaming Gorge Ranger District.
Nope, not very ATV friendly with only 2-3 Legal/50 inch rule trails.
Yes, I did operate my guiding/outfitting bsns Llama Adventure Trek in this very unit. See my link above
The Bull Moose go in the 30's to low 40's......most every year.
Okay back to the unit intel.....
Good luck, Robb
Today/this early AM we will be on the eastern side of this unit/area

Rental Cabins are Definitely Rustic ~~ but Comfy!!
Bring your own Mouse Traps!! haha
Like most any of our Rocky Mountain States; OTC bow success runs in the mid-teens to low 20% and Yes you can arrow a Cow in this Any Bull unit bow tag.
The weather can change in a Heart Beat so be prepared for rain to early heavy snow or hot heat afternoons till the thunderstorms roll in..

Great thread Robb...Thanks...I spent a few Summers of My Youth Wrangling Horses and Chopping Firewood at Spirit Lake Lodge...Yes the Fishing is Great!...Thanks again and Good Luck #LovinLife...4finger
This is like being on a guided hunt. I for one really appreciate the info your are sharing with everyone. I hunted Utah OTC in 2019 and there are elk in them there hills...
Robb, did the Colorado boys put you up to this to clear out their non-ressy's!? Like cooking up a big juicy steak right in front of a starving man!!
Very nicely done and I've bookmarked it for the future. If nothing else for a cheap camping trip in a beautiful area, some fishing and a bonus elk tag. Thank you!
Robb, your the best. Thanks.
Fire sure messed with some of the remote trail signs but ya can still make out enough to know which direction a guy wants to go

Thank You for the kind words Fella's!!
GreyGhost/Matt;s thread did kinda give me a Push! haha
Like I've stated in the past; if I get 2 or more of the same type questions I just answer them on my thread.
Plus as is pretty much common knowledge ~~ I'm only on-line for about an hour in the early AM...….
Youth hunt is this AM's biggest question asked
Last year Amanda had 3 shots at the same bull but didn't connect Dang it! good kid and her dad and mom did great with her. I can Border jump into Wyo and help out guys that have the Wyo 31/32 Bull tag one day and then back over into Utah in this unit and help out the Youth tag holder, so it is a fun week for me.
Yes a Youth can us a Bow even though it's an Any Weapon hunt.
Like any other elk hunt in mid-September it can be Rut heavy with bugling ect or it can be slooooowwwww and lot's of hiking/glassing!
Anyways, back to the Intel-------->
Good luck, Robb
This is an out of the way campground, not real big and you can hunt right out of camp along Carter Creek.

From this pic, even though it's a ways off, you can see the Quakie/Pine mix that the elk love for eating/water and then right into the bedroom Pines for the day bed.
Nothing beats a big salad and Lodge cooked meal!

Quality of Bulls is your basic OTC type with raggies to the every year someone gets a Dandy bull type quality.
Last year I got (many of ya got my Text Pic) of my monster raggie!! haha and then I got my cow on a drawn muzzy tag on Halloween.
Some years it's elk harvests and some years it's Tag Soup....
That wraps this thread up------->
Thanks for taking the time to view and for your kind words and Input.

Thanks Robb - this info is REALLY appreciated and thanks for sharing. Even if just for family vacation!
Robb, in the pics of Elk Park area, the background looks like it's either burnt or been logged ten to twenty years ago? Great country to lose yourself in for a week or two!
You are welcome Brian-----> Enjoy
More logging to the east/left side of Elk Park buddy, good eye for sure.
Good luck, Robb
Wow, lots of info!
Just need to get drawn for elk and burn my points in a good unit then consider some of the otc stuff.
Thanks Robb
Good stuff, Robb....thanks for sharing!
Like your threads Robb. This one is interesting and enjoyable as usual. Thanks.......Bob
Great thread, but I have to ask why expose your exact elk spots? Very generous of you, but I bet some other guys that hunt are not as enthused haha! None the less, fun read and thanks for sharing.
Those are huge areas that are well known in UT. Not sure he really exposed any secret spots. To me it’s just a highlight of some beautiful Utah Country. Thanks Robb.
Thanks fella's
Sorry Walt, trail head signs or camping spot signs aren't necessarily hunt/harvest spots.....I do see your point of view for sure though.
I'm out of here this early AM for a quick 4 day Yote hunt up there/Red Canyon Lodge Cabin as base camp as I'm trying to get a head of this 'uge snow storm coming in later tonight.....Plus I'm on a delivery delay wait for some tile to finish up a bathroom.....dang it!
I'm all packed up except the cooler, shave & shower then on the road!
For sure the snowshoes are loaded haha
Thanks again,
Robb
